Streetwise Opera announces 15th anniversary opera

3:46, 17th October 2017

Streetwise Opera will celebrate its 15th anniversary by presenting the premiere of a new immersive opera on 14 and 15 April 2018 at Sage Gateshead.

Tell Me The Truth About Love will be performed by adults from Streetwise Opera Newcastle/Gateshead who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness, alongside musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia.

The show will be directed by Bijan Sheibani and designed by Samal Blak, with writing and dramaturgy by Meriel Sheibani-Clare.

Tell Me the Truth About Love explores love through an immersive wedding theme in which audience members join the wedding party of a mystery couple. The work will explore various types of love, with various members of the party breaking out in song and telling their tales.

The opera was inspired by real-life stories of love, gathered by Streetwise Opera performers in association with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.

The work features Benjamin Britten’s cabaret song Tell Me The Truth About Love  alongside a range of new and local repertoire: composers Will Todd and Anna Appleby, who both grew up in Newcastle/Gateshead, have been commissioned to write new music, and local songs include Jimmy Nail’s Big River and Bridie Jackson’s Final Lullaby.

The show is being produced in partnership with Sage Gateshead, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, ReCoCo and Changing Lives. BBC Newcastle is media partner.

The production is the result of a long-term artistic partnership between Streetwise Opera and Sage Gateshead. The organisations collaborated in 2006 on a production of Will Todd’s Whirlwind, and Streetwise Opera currently runs weekly workshops and regularly stages small-scale performances at the venue.
