For anyone with an interest in learning to conduct singing of any kind, or who has recently started to lead a choir. No previous conducting experience necessary; also suitable for those wishing to develop their conducting and vocal technique, or have some experience in leading choral music.

Intermediate Course

The course is accredited by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and is accepted as a substitute for the DipABRSM (Music Direction). Opening and closing weekends, with four day-long sessions between, spread over half a year. For those who conduct a choir regularly and wish to develop their technique. Incls written work on programming and arranging for a choir.

32nd Annual Convention
25-27 Aug, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
Inspiration, repertoire and technique for anyone leading choral music, with presenters and choirs from the UK and abroad. This year’s themes include repertoire, technique, the voice, and diversity and unity. The Gala Concert will be open to members of the public as well as Convention delegates.

Young Conductors’ Course

Practical, hands-on course for anyone aged 18-25, running parallel with the Annual Convention.

Singing Gregorian Chant and Renaissance Polyphony

Michael Alan Anderson leads an exploration of the genres and styles of traditional western plainchant and the study and execution of
renaissance vocal polyphony, including performance and historical background, notation, and contemporary theory and practice. For church music directors, choral directors, and singers wishing to gain a stronger foundation in early music.

With William Weinert (director), Robert Swensen and Monica Dale. Topics relevant to choral artistry are addressed by choral directors and accompanists. Daily sessions in conducting, singing, musicianship, class performance, vocal pedagogy, repertory selection, and movement-oriented Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Each participating conductor will conduct Voices, the professional chamber chorus in residence at the Institute. The course is limited to 14 conductors.

Advanced Choral Conducting: Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Howells’s Requiem

Craig Hella Johnson and William Weinert lead in-depth analyses and rehearsals of Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Howells’s Requiem, exploring recent research on issues of choral and instrumental performance practice in the romantic era.
